Noni was first found and used by man long before recorded history in Southeast Asia and the subcontinent, when ancient Indian medicine men began studying the natural world to find plants beneficial not only for food, but to treat disease and otherwise benefit their health. They developed a medical system of using plants and natural treatments to influence their health and called it Ayurveda, Sanskrit for "the science of life." A highly elevated system of natural medicine, Ayurveda is still used today.
Noni has been described to have a range of health benefits for colds, cancer, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, pain, skin infection, high blood pressure, mental depression, atherosclerosis and arthritis.
The noni contain the antibacterial compounds in the fruits (acubin, L-asperuloside and alizarin) and roots (anthrauinones). Noni conatins scopoletin which inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli, which is responsible for intestinal infections, and Heliobacter pylori, which causes ulcers.
Damnacanthal, which is found in the noni roots, inhibits the tyrosine kinase and gives noni antitumor activity.
So what is the secret of this apparently multifaceted and powerful herb? While there is no clear answer, a wide variety of likely reasons have been indicated. As Noni International says in its booklet, no one knows precisely why noni benefits so many health concerns; some say it is a synergistic effect of all its natural ingredients, white others attribute the benefits to its alkaloid, xeronine and proxeronase content.
Noni juice (morinda citrifolia) has received a meteoric rise in fame since its inception back in 1996 with worldwide sales now over US$1,000,000,000. Used for thousands of years as a health tonic to treat usual ailments, only in the last 10 years have the benefits of noni juice been acknowledged by the western world.
